Choosing The Right Snowblower

For people who are buying a snow blower for the first time, it is important to make the correct choice so your snow blower will last you long. The biggest job is picking the correct brand and model for the region you live in. The process of choosing the right snow blower can me tedious, but it will be worth it in the long run.

Snow blower vs. Snow thrower

Snow blowers and snow throwers are very similar; they both blow snow. The difference between them lies between how much snow they move and how fast they move it.  The first step you need to take in deciding which snow blower you need is to decide where you are going to use it. Do you need it for the sidewalk, driveway, roadway, or everything? If you answered that you just needed it for the sidewalk, a snow thrower will be the best bet. Snow throwers are lightweight and they move a small amount of snow. They are perfect for the sidewalk, or for areas of light snowfall. Toro is the leader in snow throwers. Their power shovel model will get the job done for this purpose. If you need a machine to move snow for other purposes, such as a driveway, you will require a snow blower. Snow blowers are more heavy-duty than a snow thrower and are perfect for areas of medium to heavy snowfall.

Single Stage vs. Two Stage

Choosing a single stage or two stage is the second step you need to take in choosing your snow blower. Single stage snow blowers have an auger that is in contact with the ground, which scoops up snow and throws it out a chute. The drawbacks of having a single stage snowblower are that low power two-cycle engines and usually produce more emissions. The benefits of a single stage snow blower is that they are light-weight and easy to maintenance.

Two stage snow blowers are heavier and generally more expensive. They usually have a clearing width of 25 inches, which is considerably higher than a single stage snow blower. Two stage snow blowers are usually reserved for parts of the country with heavy snowfall. The way a two stage snow blower works is that a metal auger scoops up into the snow, which is then sucked up by an impellor and thrown out a chute. The difference here is the impellor. An impellor in a snow blower can effectively cut the job done in half. These powerful beasts can handle any type of snow - dry, wet or condensed.

Conclusion

The two main factors when choosing a snow blower are its purpose and a single or two stage snow blower. These two factors are the key things to look for when choosing a snow blower. You can check out more snowblower reviews and learn more about snow blowers on our website.

I would like to purchase or rent a snow machine (artificial or real doesn't matter) or i've heard that you can make your own somehow. I just want to cover my front yard in it, and i have a pretty small to medium sized yard, but i want it to be about two feet deep. thanks ans i will award best answer :)

What is wrong with my snow blower?

I have had a 'MTD Yard Machines' 8 horsepower - 26" self-propelled snow blower since 1997.

When I went to use it today, everything was great until I tried to engaged the auger by pushing down on the handle. At first it shut off and after I started it again, it then make a weird noise and seemed to be smoking in the engine. (I do have the original manual).

I did remove the cover and checked the belts, and they appear to be OK.

Does this problem sound like it is the belts or could be another type of problem?

Being a single woman, I am not a mechanic but I at least would like an idea of what could be wrong with my snow blower!

I have the key - it's round and plastic. I do not see anywhere it can be inserted.

Giant snowblowers are must-haves during the winter season especially if you live in an area where snowfall is quite heavy. These giant snow machines are powerful workers that will not be easily intimidated by even deep and heavy snow coverage that exceeds 12 inches in depth. They can tackle even the heaviest snow jobs and plow through even the deepest snow. If you have major snow clearing needs, you should check out some of the giant snowblowers around.

What Giant Snowblowers Should Be

The giant snowblowers have certain requirements to make sure that they are well-built for the task they are meant for. One of the most important things about giant snowblowers is the engine. Large snow machines should be equipped with engines that are at par with their large sizes. If not, the large sizes would be useless as the engine is unable to meet the power required by heavy duty snow work. There are good engines that are often used in manufacturing excellent and high-grade snow blowers, such as Tecumseh and Briggs and Stratton engines. Such engines are equipped with optimum power and are very durable and thus ensure the performance of the large snow blowers. If you hear the names Tecumseh and Briggs and Stratton when it comes to snow blower engines, you know you can rely on the performance of that snow equipment.

Aside from the engines, giant snowblowers should also have high snow clearing specifications. The factors you need to consider include the clearing width, intake height, and how far the snow is thrown. The clearing width affects how fast you can clear snow away from your driveway. Snowblowers with small clearing widths require more passes before they can get the work done. The intake height determines the depth of snow coverage that the snow blower can plow through and clear. The distance of the throw is also an important consideration. If you have a wide driveway, you need a snow machine that can throw snow a considerable distance to ensure that the snow will be effectively cleared from your entire driveway. There are several top-rating giant models from top snow blower brands such as Troy Bilt and Toro that meet the following requirements soundly.

A Snow Giant: Toro Power Max

Giant snowblowers for homeowners are the two-stage heavy duty snowblowers, which are available from a lot of brands. Toro, as one of the biggest manufacturers of snow equipments, offers the heavy duty Toro Power Max model. The large snow machine looks ready for anything in the snow, and it definitely is. The good thing about this is that it can be easily maneuvered despite its large size. The machine features a Freewheel steering system for this as well as a Quick Stick chute control system. The Power Max system also lends the machine the necessary capability to handle large and heavy amounts of snow as fast as possible. Other features include electric starter, an auger gearcase, X-Trac tires, one-hand interlock, as well as reversible skid shoes to protect your driveway.

Heavy Duty YardMan Snow Machines

Aside from that, you should also check out the large snow blower series from other brands such as Simplicity and YardMan. YardMan offers an entire line of products under the Heavy Duty category, such as the H9JKI and the E9P3J, both with 16.5 GT 342cc OHV engines. The first has a clearing width of 33 inches, while the latter of 45 inches.

Large Frame and Signature Pro Series from Simplicity

Simplicity also offers its Large-Frame series and Signature Pro Commercial series, both of which include models that are large and can tackle heavy snow. The Large Frame machines come with all-steel chutes, Free Hand control, Easy Turn system, and prices at $1,200 to $2,050. The Signature Pro Commercial series adds the Snow Series MAX engines from Briggs and Stratton as well as heavy duty cast iron gear housings. The prices range from $1,850 to $2,700.

Pros: Giant snowblowers can tackle even heavy and deep snow coverage. Good models include some from

Cons: Be ready to spend a bit more for large-scale snow blowers.

The Verdict

If the snowfall and snow coverage in your area is heavy, buying giant snowblowers is a better option than buying a small or medium scale snow blower that won’t be up to the job at hand.
